This Week in Chester History…

In 1938, the Chester Township Committee became a court of law at the Chester Grammar School in the case of a liquor license renewal for the Old Mill Tavern at Milldale. Tavern owner Amzi Fleming fought against his neighbors, who complained that they were continually awakened in the wee hours of the morning by drinkers leaving the tavern who honked their car horns or sung loudly on their way out. The neighbors also complained of dropping property values. Fleming refuted all of the charges satisfactorily, and the Committee renewed his license. Source: Mendham-Chester Tribune
