In 1960, the Observer-Tribune noted that Rep. Peter Frelinghuysen, Jr. (R) pledged to work for the abolition of the Electoral College. He said that in some states, a citizen’s vote weighs more than others. He used a ratio example to prove his point. Nevada, which had a population of 250,000 and 3 electoral votes, versus New Jersey, which had 24 times the population and only 16 electors — “In other words, a vote cast in Nevada is worth five times a vote cast in New Jersey,” Frelinghuysen said.
