This Week in Chester History…

In 1955, The Mendham-Chester Tribune newspaper profiled PTA President William G. Cleland of Pleasant Hill Road. The piece notes that Cleland was born in New Brunswick and graduated with a degree in civil engineering from Rutgers University in 1927. During WWII, he managed Newark Steel Drum Company. Later, he was secretary and treasurer of Winans Contracting Company, a road contractor. Before moving to Chester Township in 1952, Bill, his wife Dorothy, daughter Jocelyn, and son William lived in North Plainfield.
