The estate of R.C. Howell on the South side of Route 24 became the home of a woodland management demonstration plot by the New Jersey Department of Conservation, in 1960. The best trees in the 100 square foot area were painted with a white band. “Defective” trees were painted with red bands. Six such plots were located in Morris County, and more than 60 throughout the rest of the state. Source: Observer-Tribune
