Description based on DACS.
The Wyckoffs are able to trace their family history to 1624 and their ancestor Pieter Claesen (later Wykhof) in New Netherland. Five generations later, Martin Wyckoff (1749-1831) moved to Chester in 1798. His son Hendrick (1771-1852) lived in Readington, N.J., but his son Michael Decker Wyckoff (1810-1889) lived and worked in Chester as a farmer. Michael’s son George Washington Wyckoff (1858-1939) also was a Chester farmer and the grandfather of Beatrice Wyckoff Case (see below).
In this collection, the key figures are Beatrice Wyckoff Case; Joan Sylvester Case; John Thomas Wyckoff, Sr.; and Louis Lee Case, Sr., although other family members also are represented in the collection.
Beatrice Hazel Wyckoff Case, 1914-1990
Beatrice Hazel Wyckoff was born at home in Chester to John Sylvester Wyckoff (1880-1975) and Jennie Burd Wyckoff (1889-1958). In all, the Wyckoffs had five children: Elnora (1970-1980), Ruth (1908-1908, lived one day), Edgar (1909-1916), Beatrice, and John Thomas (1923-2010). Edgar died young from blood poisoning – the likely result of having been pushed off of a bicycle and sustaining injuries. The Wyckoffs also raised many foster children.
Beatrice was a stay-at-home mom until the children were old enough for her to return to work. She served as manager of food services at St. Bernards School and as cashier and hostess at the Chester Diner. She attended Grove Street School until 1924, when Williamson School was built, then attended Bernardsville High School. Beatrice appears in photos in the collection, and some of her papers are included.
Louis Lee Case, Sr., 1919-1972
Louis Lee Case, Sr. was born in Brookhaven, Mississippi to Louis Case (1897-1929) and Bertha Rena Furlow Case (later Hamilton) (c. 1899-1978). The elder Cases had four children: Louis Lee, Memphis (1922-1981), Grace (1925-), and Julia Mae (1928-2011). Beatrice met Louis while he served at Fort Dix. She and a friend were out for a drive when they picked up Louis, who was hitch-hiking with his friend. Six weeks later, they married, and Louis left to serve in World War II, where he was a sergeant in the Army, 602nd Tank Destroyer Battalion, Headquarters Company. After his service, Louis returned to Chester, where he and Beatrice raised three children, Louis Lee Case, Jr. (1950-), Janice Rena Case Corbetis (1952-), and Joan Sylvester Case (1953-). Louis Lee Case, Sr. worked as a carpenter and contractor, and built many of the homes in the area.
Louis Lee Case, Jr. served 27 years as a Chester Township Police officer and later as a Police and Fire dispatcher. He also served on the Chester First Aid Squad. He is a member of the Chester Volunteer Fire Company. He attended Williamson School, West Morris Central High School (graduated in 1970), County College of Morris, and New Jersey State Police Academy (graduated in 1972). His wife is Georgia Ann Apgar, daughter of Marion and George Apgar. The Apgar name has been present in Chester from it days as an iron-mining town. The Cases live in Chester.
Janice Rena Case Corbetis lives on Long Island, N.Y. with her husband William Corbetis.
John Thomas Wyckoff, Sr. (1923-2010)
John Thomas Wyckoff was Beatrice’s younger brother. He attended Williamson School and Roxbury High School. Prior to becoming an electrician at Bell Labs in Chester and a photographer, he was a builder and mason. He married Joyce Gray and had two sons, John Thomas, Jr. and Jeffrey William. Many of the early photographs in the collection, including the glass plates, were created by John. He taught Joan Sylvester Case photography.
Joan Sylvester Case (1953-)
Joan Sylvester Case, daughter of Beatrice and Louis, married Lewis Arthur Hill in 1972 and divorced in 1976. She attended Williamson School and West Morris High School in Chester, the New York Institute of Photography in New York City, and County College of Morris in Randolph, N.J. She has been a photographer since 1985 and has served as Area Sales Manager since 2005 (also from 1987-1996) at Fischer Thompson Beverage, Inc. in Flanders, N.J. Previously, she owned the Expressions Gallery in Chester and was District Supervisor at Somerset Farms Dairy in Middlebush, N.J.
Joan has served in many Chester organizations including as President of the Chester Historical Society, Chair of the Chester Bicentennial, Co-Historian for Chester Township (appointed by Mayor Ken Caro), Treasurer of both Chester Business Association and Ladies Auxiliary of the Chester Volunteer Fire Company, Historian of the First Congregational Church, and Chair of Trustees of the First Congregational Church.
Many of the later photographs and educational records were created by Joan.
Joan Case also created the two books on Chester listed in the Related Items section.
The Budd Family Relationship
The Wyckoffs are related to the Budd family through Beatrice Wyckoff Case’s first cousin Edward Wyckoff (1933-2001). Edward was the son of Elias Emmons Wyckoff (1895-1950) (son of George Washington Wyckoff) and Annie Lee Miller (1897-1994). Edward’s daughter Paula married Kenneth Budd. The Budds live in Chester.
The Wyckoff Family Collection contains a variety of material, the bulk of which spans from the 1860s through 2016. It is a growing collection, with deposits added periodically. There are undated items, mainly photographic prints, although most of the collection includes at least partial identification. Material types include letters and correspondence, legal documents, receipts, programs, booklets, scrapbook pages, photographs, postcards, and ephemera.
The Historic Chester series of photographs, postcards, and other documents were digitized by Joan Case and added to the collection in October of 2017. This series comprises 536 files in 22 folders, totaling 5.64 GB of data. The designations created by Case in the Historic Chester series are Businesses, Cemeteries, Churches, Families, Chester Fire Company, Government, Homes, Main Street, Military, Misc., People, Railroads and Mining, Scenes, Schools, Side Roads, and Street Scenes. Images are in color and black and white. Some are digitized re-prints of glass plate images created by her uncle John T. Wyckoff; others are images created by Case. Most of the items reformatted by the Chester Library’s Local History Department for online viewing keep their original naming conventions, although some have been altered for increased accessibility by researchers.
A portion of the collection is devoted to the educational and sporting pursuits of Joan Case, with particular emphasis on Williamson School and West Morris High School. Her report cards from kindergarten through elementary school, competition ribbons, and team patches are lively representations of a childhood in Chester.
Researchers also will find the landscape and town photographs taken by John T. Wyckoff and others provide a visual description of Chester throughout the years.
Additionally, the Budd Family scrapbook pages (dated and labeled) show one of Northern New Jersey’s major families during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
One of the unique items in the collection is a Question Book from the Patriotic Order of Americans, Camp 82 (1921-1930). It shows responses to questions reflecting the member’s commitment to the organization and country as a whole. Many of the small community’s more active members are represented in this book.

The materials digitized by Joan Case fall into the following subseries: Businesses, Cemeteries, Churches, Families, Fire Company, Government, Homes, Main Street, Military, Misc., People, Railroads and Mining, Scenes, Schools, Side Roads, and Street Scenes. Businesses are further segmented into Chester House, Mills, and Pleasant Pools.

These materials have been reformatted for easy online viewing. Some of the names of the original files have been altered to make them more accessible to researchers.
The Correspondence series is composed mainly of Joan S. Case’s elementary school report cards and some letters. The bulk of the materials date from 1958-1967, although there is some more modern correspondence in the series.
The items in this series are housed in three folders in box 3.
