Chester, New Jersey, A Scrapbook of History Index
In the 1960s, Frances Ford Greenidge (1905-2002) collected the stories of Chester from its elderly residents. Greenidge lived in the area for a relatively short time, but published Chester, New Jersey, A Scrapbook of History in 1974, five years after she moved back to Chatham. To research the book, she spoke with many members of the local community. In particular, she credits W. Edwin Collis, Herbert T. Conover, John V.D. Croot, Mrs. J. Ralph Evans, Mrs. J. Cecil Hoffman, George Nas, and William L. Tredway. These and other individuals shared with her the stories they had heard of Chester’s earliest days, as well as events they had experienced.
The book is a popular reference for Chester’s history researchers. Although the book was published with its own index, the Chester Library Local History Department re-indexed the 1974 printing of the book to include a much more extensive listing of businesses, names, landmarks, locations, and subjects. This new index includes more than 3,000 search terms. Please note that in some cases, a last name is provided without a first name or with only a title.
