Description

Square and Mill Street, German Valley, N.J., postcard, undated.

A close neighbor of Chester, German Valley was settled in the early 1700s by Dutch Reformed families formerly of Prussia. Early telephone service in German Valley was supplied by Chester. Now part of Washington Township, the town changed its name to Long Valley during World War I to avoid the growing anti-German sentiment in the area.

The author of this postcard is Ruth, who writes, “Tell Consuelo to write.” She sent the message to Mrs. Sutton of 1676 Grange Street in Newark, N.J.
