In 1956, The Mendham-Chester Tribune profiled Charlotte Maysey, wife of Charles and mother of Larry. The article highlighted her trophy-winning Chester Bowling League participation and her service with the Chester Women’s League. Maysey also was president of the American Legion Bernays Apgar Post 342 Ladies Auxiliary.


This Week in Chester History…

In 1961, the Observer-Tribune announced that Bernays Apgar Post Unit 342 of the American Legion members sought cancelled stamps. Auxilliary members also collected coupons and nylons, reminding readers that the container for the stockings was located at the Chester Post Office. Chairperson Elizabeth Apgar said 308 coupons, 11 pounds of nylons, and 3400 stamps were given to the county for the months of October and November.


This Week in Chester History…

In 1955, Leonard Barker of the Bernays Apgar Post No. 342 was named State American Legion Contact Representative with Lyons Veterans Administration Hospital. The Mendham-Chester Tribune said he was installed at the hospital on Armistice Day, with ceremonies featuring the Bound Brook Drum and Bugle Corps.


This Week in Chester History…

In 1955, a committee from the Bernays Apgar Post of the American Legion entertained and visited patients at Lyons Hospital for Veterans. The members were Mrs. Elizabeth Apgar, Willard Apgar, John Apgar, Mrs. George Apgar, Mrs. Hazel Apgar, and Leonard Barker. Barker was the state representative of the American Legion at Lyons. In 1955, the members of the American Legion Bernays Apgar Post No. 342 met to discuss the Legion Home. For nine years, the members had worked to obtain a permanent meeting place and home, with little luck. Their next effort would be to try to locate property in the business zone.
