In 2002, the Observer-Tribune placed a spotlight on the upcoming fourth annual Oktoberfest, sponsored by the Chester Lions Club. In 1955, the Chester Auxiliary of the American Legion delivered four truckloads of donated furniture to two veterans who had lost their homes due to recent floods. The Auxiliary was headed by Mrs. Russell Apgar, Mrs. Elizabeth Apgar, and Mrs. John Steinberg. The ladies and their husbands collected the donated materials in addition to other donations for those affected by the flooding. Source: The Mendham-Chester Tribune.
