Former Chester Borough Mayor Charles Williamson died at his home on March 4, 1969 due to a heart attack. He was 73. Mr. Williamson was the first president and charter member of the Chester Rotary club, a veteran of WWI, and a former fire chief amongst other titles and accolades. Source: Observer-Tribune
This Week in Chester History
In 1958, the Mendham-Chester Tribune reported that the Rotary Clubs of Chester and Bernardsville would meet to hear Dr. Hollington K. Tong, Ambassador of the United States to the Republic of China and Formosa (Taiwan) speak on current events. The meeting occurred during a period of high tension between the US and East Asia due to Cold War Era policies.

The Chester Rotary Club presented a check for $100 to John Hoffman of the Chester First Aid Squad. Henry Gapinski, the club president, also gave a $316 check to Louis Bell of the West Morris Regional High School Student Council, and $100 to Leonard Smalley, Chester Fire Chief. The Rotary Club meeting where all the awards were handed out took place at the Chester House in 1961. Source: Observer-Tribune

In 1955, Chester Paul Apgar, an on-and-off again Chester Borough Council member since 1933, passed away at the age of 79. Born in Califon, Apgar lived most of his life in Chester, where he had his coal business for 20 years. He was a charter member of the Chester Rotary Club, the Chester Nurse’s Association, and the Pleasant Hill Cemetery Association. He also was tax collector for the township and municipality before it was split to form the township and borough. Source: The Mendham-Chester Tribune.
