This Week in Chester History…
In 1955, the Chester School held a Music Workshop attended by 160 people. Participating districts included Jefferson, Milton, Mount Arlington, Chester, Netcong, Mendham Township, Washington Township, Budd Lake, Wharton, and Flanders. Children in primary, middle, and upper grades participated in demonstrations of vocal music, music appreciation, instrumentals, rhythms, and creative dancing. Source: Mendham-Chester Tribune

The Observer-Tribune reported that Nancy Sturzenegger held a swimming party and buffet supper for 24 other female graduates of West Morris Regional High School’s class of 1961. Party-goers were from Chester, Mendham, Washington Valley, Long Valley, Flanders, and Hackettstown.

In 1937, the Mendham-Chester Tribune bemoaned the relocation to Flanders of celestial orchestra leader Arthur Ferris and his wife. The paper reported, “No longer to be found in his Ironia haunts was the bearded evangelist who was wont to raise chickens and receive messages from the angels concerning his music and 36 pieces.”
This Week in Chester History…
In 1958, “Grey Top,” the mansion built in 1890 by Samuel Cooper Pullman, of Pullman Railroad Company fame, burned to the ground. The three-story, 20-room home stood at the peak of Fairmount Avenue, and was owned by Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Guerin. Fire companies from Chester, Ralston, Mendham, Peapack-Gladstone, Ironia, Flanders, Fairmount, and Mt. Freedom fought the fire with water from Leslie Apgar’s pond on Maple Avenue.
