This Week in Chester History…
In 1938, the Mendham-Chester Tribune reported the Chester Library Association held its annual meeting in the Library. Frances Tredway was appointed Librarian for one year. She said 7739 books circulated during 1937, marking an increase of 1,236 books over 1936.
This Week in Chester History…
In 1961, Frances Tredway of Church Street retired from the Chester Public Library after 30 years of service. The Observer-Tribune reported that the Library had been founded in 1911 by Miss Agnew, a Trenton State librarian, with a collection of 50 books. At the time of that story, the Library had been located on Hillside Road, behind the Post Office, and was open Saturday afternoons and Tuesday evenings (as opposed to today, when we are open 7 days a week, except in summer, when we close on Sundays).
