In 1958, “Grey Top,” the mansion built in 1890 by Samuel Cooper Pullman, of Pullman Railroad Company fame, burned to the ground. The three-story, 20-room home stood at the peak of Fairmount Avenue, and was owned by Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Guerin. Fire companies from Chester, Ralston, Mendham, Peapack-Gladstone, Ironia, Flanders, Fairmount, and Mt. Freedom fought the fire with water from Leslie Apgar’s pond on Maple Avenue.  Source: The Mendham-Chester Tribune
