In 1938, five members of the Chester Tuna Club enjoyed a deep sea fishing trip at Brielle. The members were William Crammer, J. Cecil Hoffman, Mahlon Pitney, Justin Russel, and Art Thompson. They caught 8 tuna and 1 bonita; the largest fish, which weighed 25 lbs, was caught by Russel. The Mendham-Chester Tribune did not hesitate to mention that “incidentally (and confidentially) a couple of the members of the party became slightly indisposed while on the ocean.”
