This Week in Chester History
In 1979, former Township Clerk Margaret Thomson made history as the first woman appointed to the Chester Township police department as a regular police officer. The council voted unanimously on the appointment. Thomson had been an employee of the township for nine years as a part-time secretary and township clerk.

The Observer-Tribune reported in 1960 that the Chester Borough ordinance to increase the salary of Council members passed. The annual stipend jumped from $50 to $400, with a $500 salary for the Mayor. Also, Mrs. Edward Thomas was named a special police officer at school crossings, and she would receive an hourly wage of $1.50.
