This Week in Chester History
In 1975, Chester Borough was approved for rural route mail delivery. Only residents living within one-eighth of a mile from the post office will still have to go there for their daily mail. Postmaster Anthony D’Andrea emphasized that no one will be forced to accept mail delivery and “those who enjoy the daily trek and the socializing at the post office may continue to receive their mail there.”

This Week in Chester History…
The Chester Borough Council condemned the old George house on Main Street in 1937, according to the Mendham-Chester Tribune. The building had been declared unfit for use in 1936. The building had been located between the Post Office and John Frageman’s barber shop.

In 1938, Postmaster Austin Thompson announced that all air mail leaving Chester would have a special cachet on it in honor of National Air Mail Week. Air mail would be taken to Basking Ridge and flown from Somerset Hills Airport to Newark Airport. Source: The Mendham-Chester Tribune
