This Week in Chester History…

Newly elected William Woodruff succeeded Clifford W. Emmons as chair of the Chester Township Committee, in 1938. The Mendham-Chester Tribune said he led the first regular meeting of the year, held at the Chester School. Also sworn in on New Year’s Day were Stanley Bodine, Raymond Croot, Harold Philower, and Benjamin Henderson.


This Week in Chester History…

Three Chester School Board members were succeeded by Ellsworth W. Stroud, Roland W. Chamberlain, and Caspar Kaffke, in 1937. The Mendham-Chester Tribune said the retiring members were Fred DeHart, Stanley Bodine, and Raymond Croot. The school budget was $18,681.


This Week in Chester History…

In 1938, both Chester Borough and Township held their first regular meetings of the year. Mayor Daniel S. Budd led the Borough for his second year in office, while Dr. Hugh Fry and Edward Pickel, Sr., succeeded Robert Hughson and Fred DeHart on the Board. For the Township, William Woodruff began his chairmanship over the first meeting at the Chester School. He succeeded Clifford W. Emmons. Also sworn in on New Year’s Day was Stanley Bodine. This Week in Chester History…

In 1937, the Mendham-Chester Tribune announced the election results for the area. In Chester Township, Stanley Bodine won a spot on the Committee and Ralph Robinson was elected Tax Assessor. Both were Democrats. Bodine won by nine votes. In the Borough, the Democrats also defeated the Republicans. Dr. Hugh R. Fry and Edward Pickel, Sr. landed memberships on the Council, while Harry G. Segur won the Tax Assessor race.
