In 1937, the Mendham-Chester Tribune reported results from the New Jersey Bell Telephone Company’s annual report. For example, the number of telephones in service increased by 32,343. Of the 96,000 telephones lost during the depression, more than half had been regained by the end of 1936. Switchboard operators had their hands full. They handled an average of 2,672,580 calls per day in 1936, compared with 2,505,066 a day in 1935.
