This Week in Chester History…
The 1936 Thanksgiving Day menu in the Mendham-Chester Tribune included the following: Clam Juice Cocktail, Roast Turkey, Olives, Celery, Small Pickled Onions, Corn and Green Pepper Stuffing, Black Walnut and Marshmallow Yams, Mashed Potatoes, Giblet Gravy, Frozen Fruit Salad, Buttered Cauliflower, Refrigerator Rolls, Cranberry Jelly, and Mincemeat Custard Pie. The recipes for the turkey, stuffing, and yams were featured on page 3.
This Week in Chester History…
In 1937, the men of the Federated Church served 120 turkey dinners to celebrate Thanksgiving. According to the Mendham-Chester Tribune, “the men were marked highly for service; the women for cooking.”

In 1936, Sutton’s Food Store advertised the following Thanksgiving specials: fresh fancy turkeys at 27 cents a pound, fancy fruit cocktail at 23 cents for a large can, Crisco at 57 cents for a 3 pound can, and fresh oysters at 19 cents per dozen. Source: Mendham-Chester Tribune
